Introduction
My name is Michaela and I am a Chemical Biology graduate of the Department of Chemistry. My exposure to and interest in research was sparked during my second year when I participated in the creation and presentation of a research poster for an Analytical Chemistry course. Shortly after, the Covid-19 pandemic put a stop to most university activities and opportunities, however my brief introduction to research led me to apply to the Co-operative education program. I worked as a Weight Lab Technician at a geochemical testing laboratory and returned the following summer as a Wet Lab and Instrument Technician. I gained new laboratory knowledge and skills working in a professional chemistry environment and this experience really opened the door to research for me.
The following semester I joined the Donkor Research Group and worked as a Research Assistant to Dr Kingsley Donkor. I completed a UREAP (Undergraduate Research Experience Award Program) with my research focusing on heavy metals in disposable face masks. I went on to present my findings at the TRU Undergraduate Research Conference and the Canadian Chemistry Conference and Exhibition. My exposure to research continued to expand as I went on to be a Research Assistant the following summer, a Research Apprentice, a Research Ambassador and directed studies student.
During my time as a Research Ambassador, I helped organize, relaunch and host the “In A Nutshell” undergraduate research competition. I also took part in the research help desks, assisting students with applications or any research related questions. Throughout my degree, my passion for research and the enjoyment I’ve gained from it has only grown. I look forward to the next steps in my life and being able to use all I’ve learnt from this process.
Here is a curated collection that showcases my research knowledge and accomplishments.
